Buy New Underwear

Let's face it. There are a lot of not-so-glamorous things about the first few months of motherhood.

One that lingers in the back of my mind is lochia. You know, the period you enjoyed not having for 10 months comes back with a vengeance for the first 4-6 weeks postpartum.

Your body is leaking from every orifice. Tears, breastmilk, lochia, none of which make you feel any more like the human you were before you grew another.

But I have some advise. Before you have that baby, spend some time with your underwear. Give it a good sorting. Find the pairs that really are trash (usually the ones you saved for 'just in case' or your 'period pairs') and put them aside. They belong in the trash but have one final duty. Then take every other 'every day' pair and down grade them. These are now your 'just in case period underwear.' Finally, buy yourself some new underwear! Nothing special, noting pretty or sexy, just good pairs that get the job done, fit well, and are comfortable.

So here's the plan. When you are bleeding postpartum, and happen to get blood on a pair of underwear, don't be bothered, these are the old pairs anyway, so just toss them. One less item in the laundry, one less thing to check. Heck, even if some of the 'new' period underwear get tossed, you'll be fine.

So then, when you are done bleeding, you have brand new underwear. It really is the little things that help you feel human after having a baby. Showering, brushing your hair and teeth, and new underwear.
